Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources
Since the expansion of our portfolio with the Diana acquisition, sustainable use of marine resources has become all the more important to us. That’s because, along with other natural raw materials such as fruit and vegetables, we now also process fish and other kinds of seafood for use in our products.
Half of the edible fish already comes from aquaculture. We’ve developed a sustainable approach to feeding the fish – food higher in nutrition can be better absorbed by the fish, thus leading to better growth and lower mortality. What’s more, no additional fish needs to be purchased to produce food. Thanks to higher tolerability, we were able to improve intake and thus reduce sediment.
Similarly, with various environmental goals along the entire value chain, we contribute to maintaining oceans, seas and biodiversity. For instance, Symrise works with partners and 500 growers in Calabria to make their farming more sustainable. An important component of their commitment is the protection of biodiversity. The parties develop standards for procurement and the use of raw materials that promote local diversity. Because bergamot is grown relatively close to the coasts of the Mediterranean and Ionian Seas, the partners want to find out what impact this has on the local marine life. In this way, they can better protect the flora and fauna on land and in the sea.
With our green chemistry approach, we’re working on developing new molecules with high biodegradability – another way in which Symrise contributes to preventing water pollution. Symrise is looking to expand its research focus on green chemistry in the coming years. Part of this included putting a catalysis laboratory into operation in 2013: Here, Symrise researches catalytic methods for new molecules, examines chemical processes and optimizes existing methods for aromatic substances and flavors. Catalysis is among the key technologies for developing environmentally-friendly processes with reduced energy requirements and waste.
