End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Because Symrise uses many natural raw materials for its core business, the issues of sustainable farming and food security are very dear to our hearts. And that’s why we exert our direct influence and work toward eco-friendly, socially responsible agriculture. Using our strategy of backward integration, which incorporates the preliminary stages of the value chain into the company, we can consistently ensure this goal and pursue it on a global level.
Through local projects, we provide knowledge about healthy nutrition and help to develop community capacities so that proper nutrition is ensured for everyone in the community. In less developed countries, we make sure, for instance, that the farmers there are paid fairly, that environmental aspects are considered in the growing process and that absolutely no child labor occurs. Over the past ten years, we have been committed to improving education and health care in Madagascar, where our vanilla is grown. We have established production facilities there that meet the environmental standards of the developed world. Our local business activity contributes to the livelihood of more than 30,000 people. Something similar is being developed in the Amazon region in Brazil. We require our suppliers to observe at least the statutory provisions on working times and pay for their employees.
